What to expect on the route

Not long after setting off, subtle signs from the landscape will begin to reveal how people once lived here nearly 150 years ago. This will offer an intriguing glimpse into the Chase’s human past.

A steep ascent will follow, which we’ll take at a steady, supportive pace. As we reaching the summit we’ll be met with wide, open views and an unexpected design feature that invites reflection on how the natural world influences the way we live.

From here, we’ll trace the western edge of the forest before dropping into the quieter, lesser-explored Oldacre Valley. A stream crossing via a simple wooden bridge will lead us to a bird hide. It’s here where we’ll pause for a tea break. Binoculars are strongly recommended here.

As the walk continues, we’ll pass through an area known for hosting one of the largest populations of fallow deer on Cannock Chase. Looking across the valley and surrounding hills, this section truly brings the wilderness to life.

There will be some downhill stretches that require care and confidence underfoot. However, the constantly changing scenery and potential wildlife encounters will hopefully make this a memorable experience.

As always, this is a nature walk, not a race. We’ll move steadily, taking time to notice the plants, animals and moments of quiet that define the landscape.
