classic english countryside walk

This walk offers a chance to experience the charm of the English countryside in early spring, where wildlife, hidden footpaths and sweeping rural views await…

The plan for this walk

Date: Friday 27th March 2026
Start Time: 9:30am prompt
Expected Finish: Around 1:00pm
Walk Type: 4 Moderately Difficult – Good Fitness and Mobility Required
Dogs: Unfortunately, we cannot support dogs on this walk

Leaving the shelter of the forest behind, this route takes us out into expansive farmland and along peaceful country lanes. Expect miles of grassy fields, gentle undulations and sweeping views across the Staffordshire countryside.

Along the way, we’ll navigate a network of lesser-known public footpaths, some of which are rarely signposted. This will add a real sense of exploration to the walk. There will also be plenty of wooden stiles to cross, giving the walk that classic countryside feel.

If you’re interested in developing your navigation skills, Lee will be happy to share practical tips and guidance on map reading as we make our way along the route.

What you might see

Spring will be making its presence known throughout this walk, and nature will be coming to life across the fields and hedgerows.

Hopefully, we might catch a glimpse of:

  • Newborn lambs grazing in open fields
  • Skylarks singing high above
  • Early butterflies beginning to appear
  • Bees moving between hedgerow flowers
  • Bright daffodils lining the paths

Away from the forest, there’s still a chance we may spot fallow deer moving quietly through the landscape.

What to bring

Please come prepared, so you can fully enjoy the experience. Here’s an idea of what you’ll need:

  • Walking boots (or sturdy walking shoes)
  • Quick-drying trousers or leggings (not jeans)
  • Warm layered clothing such as a base layer, fleece and waterproof coat
  • Waterproof trousers in case of rain
  • Hat and gloves, (and maybe sunglasses if we’re lucky!)
  • Personal medications if required (e.g. asthma inhaler)
  • A 1-litre bottle of water or cold drink
  • A small leakproof flask of tea or coffee for our break
  • Snacks or sweets to maintain energy levels
  • A small set of binoculars if you have them
  • A fully charged mobile phone and emergency contact details
  • A comfortable small backpack
  • Hiking poles if you feel you need them

Walking at the right pace

Just a reminder that this is a nature walk, not a race. We’ll move at a steady, comfortable pace, particularly across uneven ground and open fields where walking can feel more demanding over longer distances.

Although the route is not especially steep, the terrain and distance mean this walk is not suitable for complete beginners. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of the whole group, if you have an injury or illness, you won’t be able to take part, unfortunately.
