Walk difficulty and suitability
This walk is rated 4 (Moderately Difficult) – Good Fitness and Mobility Required.
The route involves a steep climb and several downhill sections, so a good level of fitness and mobility is required. It is, therefore, not suitable for complete beginners. If you have an injury or illness, you won’t be allowed to join this walk for safety – and group wellbeing – reasons.
As always, this is a nature walk, not a race. We’ll move steadily – particularly on the hilly sections. There’ll be time to pause and appreciate the landscape around us.
What to bring
For a safe and comfortable walk, please come prepared with:

- 1-litre bottle of water or cold drink
- Small, leakproof flask for hot drinks
- Snacks or sweets for energy
- Fully charged mobile phone and emergency contact details

A landscape in transition
As we approach early Spring, this route will showcase the broad variety of habitats that coexist across Cannock Chase.
It seems like the rain has been falling relentlessly for months. Thus, we’ll take care to avoid the muddier forest sections. Instead, we’ll follow lesser-trodden paths through ancient woodland before joining a scenic stretch of the Heart of England Way.
On the higher parts, we’ll pause to take in expansive forest panoramas before heading east to cross the Sherbrook Valley. This section will add depth and contrast to our walk.
Signs of Spring
This walk is as much about seasonal awareness as it is about distance and terrain.
Daylight is stretching further into the afternoon. Buds begin to swell. Snowdrops sparkle. Moss appears brighter and more vibrant. Daffodils lie poised, ready to burst into colour. Birdsong grows stronger with every passing day.
Bring your binoculars to observe wildlife more closely. The Chase is coming back to life!
Streams and stepping stones
Hidden trails and gentle rolling footpaths are a familiar feature of our Wilderness Walks — and this route is no exception. Some sections of this particular trail will lead us alongside a quietly enchanting stream. Carefully placed stepping stones will make crossing that bit easier.
We’ll note distinct variations in scenery across the route that make it ever-changing. And as the walk draws to a close, we’ll find ourselves enveloped by trees and the soothing sound of running water. A fitting finale to a morning spent reconnecting with nature.
