stories of mental health

When Steve first came to Walk Talk Action, he was in a dark place. What followed was a journey of growth, discovery, and the start of something life-changing…

From struggling to strong

When Steve first arrived at Walk Talk Action, he was in a dark place.

Struggling with his mental health after falling into isolation and depression, Steve came off drugs and alcohol and needed support to maintain his recovery.

Steve’s sister introduced him to WTA. And everything changed.

With the support of our 10-Step Programme, Steve has transformed his life. From feeling lost and overwhelmed, he’s now a valued Walk Leader and passionate kayaker.

His journey shows just how powerful community, structure, and – perhaps most importantly – self belief can be.

We sat down with Steve to hear more about his journey and the role Walk Talk Action played in helping him get to where he is today.

Finding balance, friendship and purpose

After coming off drugs and alcohol, Steve found himself isolated and struggling with his mental health.

“I became really depressed,” he admitted. “I stayed with WTA to help manage my anxiety and depression. It gave me something to hold onto.”

Through Walk Talk Action, Steve began to rebuild his confidence and, indeed, his life. The support and encouragement he received gave him the breathing space he needed to start again.

“I’ve found genuine friendships and peace of mind,” he shared. “I’ve learned how to cope with life on a daily basis. The tools I’ve been shown, I use all the time now to manage my anxiety.”

As he progressed through the programme, new opportunities started to appear. One of the most unexpected highlights? Kayaking.

“I never thought I’d enjoy kayaking, but I tried it with WTA and loved it,” he continued. “Now I’ve got my own kayak, and take it out most weekends.”

Steve is now keen to share his journey with others who might be where he once was.

“I’d definitely recommend the programme,” he explained. “I can tell people what I’ve got out of it and what it’s done for me.”

A measurable transformation

Steve completed the 10-Step Programme with outstanding personal growth. When he started, his self-assessment scores were middling or low.

But by the end, the change was striking. Take a look at the table below.

What’s Steve up to now?

Today, Steve leads the Longton Park walk for WTA — a role he never imagined himself doing. He also helps out at our Longton Market stall and many of our events.

Even while working night shifts, Steve still makes time for WTA. He’s completed his Walk Leader training and first aid certification.

Moreover, his love for kayaking has grown so much that he now owns his own kayak and volunteers with a local club on weekends.

“Without WTA, I wouldn’t be here today,” admits Steve. “I’ve done things I never thought possible. I can’t thank them enough.”
