Cascading beauty
Meteorological Spring may not officially have arrived yet, but nature has already begun its quiet transformation.
The air feels softer. The first fresh leaves of Elder begin to appear. Vibrant displays of daffodils and crocus brighten the paths on which we tread.
We’ll leave the muddier forest tracks behind for this walk. Instead, we’ll explore quieter trails, open footpaths and winding streams that weave through the early Spring landscape.
En route, we’ll pause to appreciate some fascinating local history before reaching what is perhaps the highlight of the morning — a series of small but lively waterfalls. After months of rainfall, these will surely cascade with added ferocity to create an even more wondrous spectacle.
The waterfalls will provide the perfect backdrop for our mid-walk tea break. And from here, we’ll continue our circular route through open fields and woodland paths.
Upon our return, we will have completed one of the longest walks in our programme so far. Thus, we have the perfect excuse for a well-earned coffee at a nearby café.
What to bring
We may be Spring-bound, but we’re not ready to ditch the layers just yet! Please come prepared, so you can fully enjoy the experience:
- Walking boots (or sturdy walking shoes)
- Quick-drying trousers or leggings (not jeans)
- Warm layered clothing such as a base layer, fleece and waterproof coat
- Waterproof trousers in case of rain
- Hat and gloves, (and maybe sunglasses if we’re lucky!)
- Personal medications if required (e.g. asthma inhaler)
- A 1-litre bottle of water or cold drink
- A small leakproof flask of tea or coffee for our break
- Snacks or sweets to maintain energy levels
- A small set of binoculars if you have them
- A fully charged mobile phone and emergency contact details
- A comfortable small backpack
- Hiking poles if you feel you need them
Walking at the right pace
As always, this is a nature walk, not a race. We’ll travel at a steady and comfortable pace, particularly on any hilly sections. This will give us plenty of time to appreciate the plants, wildlife and seasonal changes.
While the route is not especially steep, the distance means this walk is not suitable for complete beginners.
For the safety – and enjoyment – of the whole group, anyone currently managing an injury or illness will, unfortunately, not be able to take part on this occasion.
