tolkien's staffordshire

Step into the inspiration behind Middle-earth as we explore the enchanting woodlands and village paths that influenced J.R.R. Tolkien. This walk blends history, folklore, and nature for a morning of discovery and awe…

The plan for this walk

Date: Friday 10th April 2026
Start Time: 9:30am prompt
Expected Finish: Around 12:00pm
Walk Type: 3 Somewhat Demanding – basic fitness required
Dogs: Unfortunately, we cannot support dogs on this walk

Our journey will begin in the heart of a charming Staffordshire village, where we’ll pass the house where Tolkien once lived. From there, we’ll head into nearby woodlands and discover sites that inspired tales of hobbits, medieval hunting grounds, a hermit’s cave, and a bridge built for a Queen.

This is most definitely ‘The Shire,’ from which Tolkien drew so much inspiration.

What you might see

Nature will surround us throughout the walk. Keep your binoculars handy, because kestrels, sparrowhawks, and red kites may soar overhead. And if we’re very lucky we may catch a glimpse of the local deer population—who will no doubt be watching us!

Spring is awakening all around us. Early bluebells, busy bumblebees, woodpeckers, and butterflies are all likely to make an appearance.

The route

The walk includes a steady climb reminiscent of an Alpine pass, followed by a relaxing rest under towering pine trees.

On the return leg, we’ll follow the Trent and Mersey canal where we’ll likely meet passing holiday makers on narrowboats. Here, well enjoy a mid-walk tea break at a local café before finishing back at the village start point.

What to bring

To make the most of your adventure, make sure you’re properly equipped. Here’s the checklist:

  • Walking boots (or sturdy shoes)
  • Quick-drying trousers or leggings
  • Layers for warmth, plus waterproofs
  • Hat and gloves (or sunglasses if we’re lucky!)
  • Personal medications if needed
  • Water (1-litre bottle) and small snacks
  • Leakproof flask for tea or coffee
  • Binoculars for wildlife spotting
  • Fully charged mobile phone and emergency contacts
  • Small backpack for comfort
