Into the autumn forest

This walk will take us back into the forest along a maze of enchanting footpaths, where nature is never far from our side.

October brings another fascinating change to the landscape – it’s the start of mushroom season! This will hopefully mean that we may encounter some wild and wonderful fungi along the route.

The forest floor becomes a world of its own at this time of year. An incredible variety of shapes, textures and colours appear among the fallen leaves and woodland undergrowth.

But nature will only be one part of the story.

A walk with a difference

We’ll be joined by guests from GRAIN Photography, who will be continuing work on their Remembrance Project.

Their project explores the theme of remembrance through photography. We’ll have an opportunity to spend time with the team, learn more about what they’re creating and consider some of the stories and memories connected to the landscape around us.

Indeed, it’s an opportunity to experience Cannock Chase from a slightly different perspective. Not simply as a place to walk, but as a landscape that carries the memories of generations before us.

A landscape shaped by history

Cannock Chase has a rich history that is firmly connected to both World Wars. Thus, as we make our way through the forest, we’ll encounter a number of historical sites of interest.

The landscape still carries reminders of the area’s wartime past. It provides insight into how Cannock Chase was shaped by events that took place many decades ago.

We’ll take time to pause at some of these locations and reflect on their significance. Moreover, we’ll consider the people and stories behind them.

One of the aspects we admire most about our walks is that they give us the space to appreciate history in a way that simply reading about it cannot.

Something to remember

If you have any memorabilia connected to Remembrance, or something that belonged to a loved one you’ve lost, we’d encourage you to bring it along with you.

Your items will help to bring a personal dimension to the work being created as part of the GRAIN Photography project.

There’s no requirement to bring anything. But if you have an item that feels meaningful and appropriate, by all means bring it with you.

From the Chase to the Arboretum

GRAIN Photography will be producing a special piece at the National Memorial Arboretum, and Walk Talk Action have been invited to attend on 19th October.

That makes today’s walk particularly significant. It represents our final opportunity to contribute to the project before this next stage takes place.

It promises to be a unique morning on Cannock Chase.

Down to a tea

After exploring the forest and taking time to reflect along the route, we’ll make our way towards the café.

There’s no better way to round off a Wilderness Walk than with a well-earned brew!
