From Spring’s end to Summer’s edge

We’ll notice the forest changing quickly now. The days are longer, the air noticeably warmer, and the landscape is shifting.

From the outset, we’ll be surrounded by towering pine trees before the scenery opens out to reveal the sweeping beauty of the valley below. From here, we’ll follow gently rolling bridleways bordered by heather, silver birch and bilberry, all thriving in the warming conditions.

This is a time when Cannock Chase feels particularly alive. A mix of dense woodland and open plantation blending together into rich layers of green.

Fallow deer are often seen in this area. We’ll keep a quiet eye out as they move between shaded pockets of woodland to escape the increasing heat of the day.

Wildlife of the early Summer Chase

As always, nature will be very much part of the experience.

This is one of the best times of year to look and listen for ground-nesting birds such as nightjars and woodlarks. Their presence adds a special atmosphere to the open heathland sections of the walk.

We’ll also be paying close attention along the tracks for snakes! Yes, adders are most active at this time of year, although they’re shy and easily disturbed, so sightings are rare. However, if we’re lucky enough, it will be a memorable moment.

A moment of reflection

Towards the final part of the walk, we’ll see one of Cannock Chase’s most recognisable landmarks — the striking communications tower at Pye Green.

Standing tall on the edge of the landscape, this familiar structure is a reminder of more recent history on the Chase. It offers a natural point to pause, take stock, and reflect on the stories held within this ever-changing landscape.

From here, we’ll make our way towards the café for a well-earned cup of tea. A nice brew will round off the morning nicely before we break for half-term.
