Leah Lockley, Andy Hall and Karen Barber on the River Thames after receiving the National Care Group Community Champion of the Year Award 2025

Our amazing volunteers from Regent College have been recognised by the National Care Group for the outstanding work they do for Walk Talk Action…

We’re thrilled to share some wonderful news about our incredible volunteers from Regent College, Stoke-on-Trent. They’ve been recognised nationally for their outstanding contribution to Walk Talk Action and the wider community.

Led by Leah Lockley, Andy Hall, and Karen Barber, the Regent College volunteer group has been supporting Walk Talk Action for over five years. They give their time, creativity, and energy to help bring our projects to life.

A partnership built on purpose

The team first began volunteering through our 10-Step Programme, helping with hospitality and creating items to sell at events to raise vital funds.

Over time, their involvement has grown, and they’ve played a key role in helping to build and maintain our Wilderness Retreat in Fenton. It’s now a peaceful space that continues to grow and flourish thanks to their efforts.

The learners have developed valuable life and work skills. They’ve gained confidence, teamwork experience, and a real sense of belonging.

By working closely with Walk Talk Action, Leah, Andy, and Karen have created opportunities that are both meaningful and inclusive, allowing learners to contribute in ways that suit their individual needs and strengths.

National recognition for community impact

In recognition of their commitment and community spirit, Leah, Andy, and Karen were recently honoured with the National Care Group’s (NCG) Community Champion of the Year Award. This is a prestigious national accolade that celebrates people who go above and beyond to make a difference.

After first receiving certificates from Support Staffordshire, they were secretly nominated for the NCG award by Regent College Principal, Wendy Williams.

The trio went on to win both the Midlands regional title and the National Community Champion Award. This is an incredible and deserved achievement that reflects their dedication and hard work.

As part of their award, Leah, Andy, and Karen enjoyed a celebratory day in London, including a cruise and lunch along the River Thames.
