help with mental wellbeing

Tony suffered with depression and anxiety following a tragic canoeing accident while he was serving with the armed forces.

This is Tony’s story in his own words…

How it started

I first met Teri at a veterans charity that I was attending at the time.

A number of us got talking to her and she explained that she had started a charity of her own called Walk Talk Action to help people suffering with mental illness.

She explained that she ran a 10-Step Programme to help people cope with their illness.

So I, along with others, agreed to do Teri’s course.

Facing the fear

As part of the 10-Step Programme, Teri tries to arrange for each participant to get involved with something they’re interested in.

While I was a Soldier I was a part of a canoeing expedition which went terribly wrong. I lost a close friend and another lad also died.

I decided I would never get in a canoe again.

But I had a change of heart when I talked to Teri and decided to face the fear. I wanted to try and canoe on open water once more.

Teri arranged for me to do this with an organisation called the OHP, which has some very experienced canoeists in their ranks.

A gentleman called Graham gave me great encouragement and, as a result, I got in a canoe once again.

I was able to go out on open water.

Turning the corner

I felt I’d challenged and beaten a fear that had affected me all my life since the accident.

I can’t thank Teri and Walk Talk Action enough for helping me to accomplish this goal. I’ll be indebted to Walk Talk Action for the rest of my life.

I can’t recommend Walk Talk Action enough and would point anybody in distress towards Teri and her charity.
